Come spend part of your summer working with campers, building friendships, learning leadership skills, exploring and enjoying the San Joaquin River!

The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust is looking for energetic, fun-loving high school students who are interested in developing their leadership and communication skills as well as gaining experience working with younger children.

Junior Leaders assist River Camp Staff in leading a variety of activities each day including arts and crafts, swimming, canoeing, games, and songs. They act as role models for the campers, demonstrating a spirit of respect for the environment, cooperation with camp rules and guidelines, and willingness to work and play with everyone at River Camp. The Junior Leaders program includes the opportunity for teens to participate in team-building and leadership activities with their peers during the one-week camp session.

Ages: Entering 9th through 12th grades

Junior Leaders @ Scout Island

All Junior Leaders assisting with the Scout Island program are expected ride the River Camp Bus to and from Scout Island each day.  Each Junior Leader is assigned to a specific group, and works with them throughout the week.  Junior Leaders also act as 'couselors for a day,' and step into the role of leader for at least one day of camp.

Time: 8:15 am - 4:00pm, M-F

Cost: $90.00 per session

Junior Leaders @ Young Explorers

Each week a few Junior Leaders assist with the Young Explorers pre-k program at the River Center.  Junior Leaders assist counselors with the group as a whole, and take the lead on a variety of activities throughout the week.  As the Young Explorer's program only runs 9:00 am- 12:00 pm Tuesday-Thursday, this program is great for those Junior Leaders with afternoon engagements (sports camps, etc.).

Time: 8:15 am - 12:30 pm, Tu-Th

Cost: $35.00 per session

Applications for the Junior Leaders program are collected through UltraCamp. During the application process you will be asked if you are a new or returning applicant.

New applicants will complete a short form detailing why they would like to be a part of the Junior Leader program, and must supply contact information (e-mail addresses) for 2 references.  Those references will be automatically sent an online form to complete on behalf of the applicant.  While you will be able to include a short message to the reference with the form, we encourage you to obtain permission to send your references the form in advance.  Examples of potential references include teachers, counselors, coaches, parents for whom you've babysat, or other adults to whom you are not related.  River Parkway Trust staff may follow up with references regarding the information provided on the form if necessary.  Near the close of the application period (April 26th, 2019) you will be contacted to schedule a short, 15-minute interview with our Junior Leader Director prior to acceptance into the program.

Returning applicants will complete a short form detailing what you have gained from their previous experience as a Junior Leader and why you would like to participate again.  Return applicants do not have to interview or submit letters of recommendation to apply.

Please note: the "Junior Leaders Application" session is the program application only.  Once an applicant is selected and assigned a session, a link to register for that session will be sent to the e-mail address associated with the UltraCamp account.  Session assignments are typically sent out in early-mid May.  Payment is due with online registration; $90 for Junior Leaders @ Scout Island, $35 for Junior Leaders @ Young Explorers.
