Joel PickfordOur last Respite by the River in the 2014 season features local author and photographer Joel Pickford. He is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker, and author born and raised in California’s San Joaquin Valley. His photographs can be seen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Fresno Art Museum, and the Weston Gallery, among other collections.  His documentary films have been seen on PBS stations throughout the country. Joel is the author of California Light (1998), the first art book ever to combine digital reproduction with Hexachrome printing.  Joel’s decade-long documentary project, Le Monde Creole: Photographs of Southern Louisiana, culminated in an exhibition that premiered at the Fresno Art Museum in 2007 and traveled to the Centro Fotografico Manual Alvarez Bravo in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2008. Soul Calling: A Photographic Journey through the Hmong Diaspora was published by Heyday in 2012.  A companion exhibition of photographs opened in three galleries at the Fresno Art Museum.  Soul Calling was a finalist for the 2013 Northern California Book Award in creative nonfiction.  Joel holds a master’s degree in Documentary Studies and Southeast Asian Studies at California State University, Fresno.  His scholarly research also includes ethnographic fieldwork on the Laotian language and culture.

Scats on the SlyMusic for the evening will be provided by local band Scats on the Sly. Since May, 2006, Scats on The Sly has been delighting audiences of all ages with their performances of hits from the past by composers such as Louis Jordan, George Gershwin, Fats Waller and Cole Porter. With a hybrid of hot jazz and classic vocal swing, this oh-so-cool trio will take you on a musical journey back to a time when songs had charm and sophistication.

Bring your picnic dinner and blanket, and relax in the cool breezes of River Center while listening to live music. Macca's Wine Bar will be open during the dinner hour, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a wonderful selection of wines for sale by the glass. The reading will begin at 7:00 p.m. with book sales and signing after. New this Respite season, we'll have dessert for sale following the reading.
