Gene grew up in Rural Minnesota on a farm raising, cattle, hogs, sheep, horses, and chickens. After assisting a C-section of a cow in a field in a snowstorm Gene saw medicine in his future. Delivering lambs and calves, and piglets and keeping sows from deliriously lying on her piglets.
Medical school showed Gene that there is more disease and suffering out there than we can ever stamp out. But that opportunity is everywhere. Training 400 or so doctors in the specialty of emergency medicine showed him that many of them were smarter than him. Not to mention their compassion or social responsibility.
Gene’s wife Pam continues to teach him that life is not a dress rehearsal. His daughter Leslie taught him that life as a highly motivated police sergeant is better than feeling trapped indoors as an elementary teacher. His daughter Laura taught Gene that you can be a very successful attorney even with a few pesky B-minuses in school. The five grandchildren are all incubating the human condition.
Rivers and lakes are very special to Gene: Split Rock Creek was the location of Gene’s grandfather’s farm, the Boundary waters of Northern Minnesota, and Quetico is where his family would take canoe trips and wannagans. The Noatuk River was the site of Gene’s 200-mile-plus kayak trip down North America’s largest undammed watershed. Gene also enjoyed his sailing trips to the British Virgin Islands, the Greek Islands, SF Bay, Tahiti, and Puget Sound.
