River Parkway Trust to open Sycamore Island early for the 2021 season
January 6, 2021
Fresno, CA - The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust (River Parkway Trust) will open Sycamore Island for public recreation access to the San Joaquin River beginning Friday, January 8, 2021, at 6:00 am. For many years, Central Valley anglers have come to know and appreciate the great fishing opportunities at Sycamore Island. The seven inland ponds and nearly 3 miles of riverbank offer some of the best bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill fishing in the region. Boat ramps for light-weight fishing boats are available. The River Parkway Trust also offers canoe and kayak rentals on site.
Sycamore Island Ranch is a 600-acre natural open space area conveniently located in Madera near Valley Children’s Hospital. It is an excellent place for families to fish, bird watch, hike, run, kayak, canoe, picnic, ride mountain bikes, or simply relax and take in the beauty of the San Joaquin River and the wildlife inhabitants that make it their home. Construction of improvements at the Trout Pond was completed in late 2020. Improvements include an ADA accessible fishing pier and restroom, a new concrete boat ramp, and a French Drain that will support improving water quality in the pond. The CA Department of Fish and Wildlife stocked the Trout Pond with rainbow trout earlier this week.
The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust has spent the last 30+ years working with local landowners and agencies to acquire land, build trails, and improve habitat along the river for people and wildlife. The Trust is now the primary provider of public access to Parkway lands, offering nature walks and field trips to a variety of locations along the 22-mile Parkway, and public park operations at Sycamore Island, and the Coke Hallowell Center for River Studies. The River Parkway Trust operates Sycamore Island through a concessionaire agreement with the San Joaquin River Conservancy, a state agency created to develop and manage the San Joaquin River Parkway.
Sycamore Island will be open Fridays through Sundays and State holidays from January 8 to November 11. Seasonal hours of operation are 6:00 am to 5:30 pm January, February, March, October, and November; 6:00 am to 7:00 pm April and September, and 6:00 am to 8:30 pm May through August. Entry fees are $9.00 per vehicle and $5.00 per trailer. Annual passes are available for $85. Snacks, drinks, and bait are available for purchase. Sycamore Island is located in Madera County near Valley Children’s Hospital at 39664 Avenue 7 1/2, Madera, CA.
The River Parkway Trust will offer contactless payment for day-use passes online at www.riverparkway.org. The organization asks that guests practice social distancing and wear a cloth face covering when entering the bait shop or when unable to maintain a 6ft distance.
