Respite by the River

Thursday, September 14, 2023 - Reading by David Borofka and Music by Suite 101
Take a break from the rush of everyday life and join the River Parkway Trust for a Respite by the River. Bring your picnic dinner, blanket, and lawn chair, and relax at the River Center while you enjoy music provided by talented local musicians. Then you'll enjoy a reading by a Central Valley author. The evening schedule is as follows: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - Live dinner music, bring your dinner, lawn chair, or blanket 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - Reading by acclaimed author
David Borofka
David Borofka’s first collection of stories, Hints of His Mortality, was selected by Oscar Hijuelos as winner of the 1996 Iowa Award for short fiction; the stories in that collection appeared in such journals as The Southern Review, Greensboro Review, Carolina Quarterly, Black Warrior Review, Missouri Review, and Manoa, among others.
His novel, The Island, was published by MacMurray & Beck, portions of which appeared in Gettysburg Reviewand Shenandoah. He is the past winner of the Missouri Review Editors’ Prize, the Charles B. Wood Award from Carolina Quarterly, the Emerging Writers Network award, Prism Review prize, and Jabberwock Review’s Nancy D. Hargrove Editors’ Prize. His most recent collection of stories, A Longing for Impossible Things was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2022, one story of which, “Attachments for the Platonically Inclined” appeared in Coolest American Stories 2023. His new novel, The End of Good Intentions will be released by Fomite Press in the fall of 2023. A member of the faculty at Reedley College from 1983 until his retirement in 2019, he taught composition, literature, and creative writing, and he has taught on assignment for UCLA Extension Writers’ Program and CSU, Fresno.
